Unforgettable Fort Santiago in intramuros manila

The location of Fort Santiago was once the site of the palace and kingdom of Rajah Sulayman, a Muslim chieftain of pre-hispanic Manila. It was destroyed by the conquistadors upon arriving in 1570, encountering several battles with the Islamic natives. The Spaniards destroyed the native settlements and erected the Fuerte de Santiago in 1571.During the Spanish occupation, the old Manila was a city enclosed by thick, high walls situated along the banks of the Pasig River. This walled city known as Intramuros, and part of its structure is Fort Santiago, a former defense fortress built for conquistador, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. This is where Dr. Jose P. Rizal, National Hero of the Philippines, was detained before his execution in 1896. His final footsteps are embedded on this site to represent his walk from the detention cell to the place of the actual execution.
